About

This project originated at the University of Puget Sound with Professor Andrew Gomez and his students conducting interviews related to the Northwest Detention Center. With the support of the Whiting Foundation, the project was later expanded to a broader oral history project on the history of race in Tacoma that also included a series of public events on the topic. While the project is ongoing, the majority of the interviews were collected between 2019-2021, with many of the later sessions conducted remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The interviews and interview materials are also housed at the University of Puget Sound’s Special Collections. Inquiries related to the project can be sent to AndrewGomez@pugetsound.edu.
